On the lab number, DTF lasts slightly longer. On the shirt you actually wear, DTG usually wins.
Controlled wash testing puts DTF at roughly 88% colour retention after 50 washes against roughly 82% for DTG. That gap is real, and it is also about six percent. What it does not measure is how the two prints feel, how they breathe, or how they look when they finally do age. DTG ink sits inside the cotton, so it can never crack, lift or peel, and it softens the way a well loved vintage tee softens. DTF sits on the surface as a thin film. We get asked about this a lot, usually as a suspicion: "isn't DTF just the cheap one?" The honest answer is no, DTF is a legitimate modern technology. But it solves a different problem than the one we care about, and here is the full comparison so you can judge for yourself.

What is the difference between DTG and DTF printing?
DTG stands for direct to garment. The printer sprays water based ink straight into the fabric, in much the same way an inkjet printer lays ink into paper. The ink bonds with the cotton fibres, so the design becomes part of the shirt rather than a layer sitting on it.
DTF stands for direct to film. The design is printed onto a clear film, dusted with an adhesive powder, cured, then heat pressed onto the garment. The result is a thin, flexible layer of ink bonded to the surface of the fabric.
That one structural difference, ink in the fabric versus ink on the fabric, drives every trade off between the two. It explains the feel, the breathability, the way each one fails, and the range of fabrics each can handle.
Which lasts longer on a t-shirt?
We will give you the number that does not flatter us first. Industry wash testing puts DTF at around 88% colour retention after 50 wash cycles, and DTG at around 82%, with measurable DTG fading starting from roughly 30 cycles. If the only question is "which one holds pigment longest in a washing machine", DTF has a modest edge.
The more useful question is how each one fails, because that is what you notice. DTG fades. It goes gradually softer and slightly lighter, which on a Japanese-inspired or vintage-styled design tends to look intentional rather than damaged. DTF does not fade much, but when it goes wrong it lifts, cracks or peels at the edges, because there is a discrete layer that can separate from the fabric. A worn DTG print looks aged. A failed film print looks broken.

Why does Kaverii Tees print DTG only?
Because our designs are built for 100% cotton and for being worn constantly, and on that specific combination, DTG is the better tool. Four reasons, in the order they matter to us.
1. Nothing is sitting on the shirt. Our graphics are large. A Mount Fuji scene or a full torii gate covers most of the front panel. With DTG that entire area is still just cotton, so it breathes and moves like the rest of the shirt. Any surface layer over that much of a tee is something you feel on a warm day.
2. It cannot peel, and that removes the main failure risk. Every complaint people have about printed tees, cracking down a fold, an edge curling up, a corner lifting in the wash, comes from a layer separating from the fabric. DTG has no layer. The worst case is that it slowly lightens.
3. It suits the artwork. Japanese-inspired design leans on ink wash textures, brush strokes, halftones, and soft gradients. Ink absorbed into the weave renders those the way they were drawn, with the fabric texture reading through the art instead of being covered by it.
4. It ages the right way. A DTG tee at year two does not look like a shirt that failed. It looks like a shirt you have worn a lot, which is the point of a graphic tee you actually like.
The trade-off is honest: we give up a few percentage points of wash-test colour retention, and we limit ourselves to cotton garments. We think that is the right trade for what we make.

How does a DTG print age?
In the first five to ten washes a DTG print settles. Some people read this as fading, but it is mostly the excess surface ink clearing and the pretreatment washing out, and it is the point at which the print reaches its true softness.
From there it is slow. Expect a well-cared-for DTG tee to still look strong past 50 washes, with a gentle lightening that reads as character rather than damage. Blacks move toward charcoal, bright reds settle slightly. The linework and the shape of the design stay exactly where they were, because nothing is flaking away.
Compare that to how a failed surface print ages, where the design stays vivid right up until the moment a crack runs through the middle of it. Gradual is easier to live with than sudden.

Why do people think DTF printing is cheap?
It is worth answering this fairly, because the reputation is partly unearned. Most people's mental image of a heat pressed shirt comes from vinyl and plastisol transfers: thick, glossy, hot to wear, cracking down the middle after a dozen washes. Those were genuinely poor, and they were on cheap promotional shirts for two decades.
Modern DTF is not that. A current DTF layer is around 50 to 80 microns thick, thinner than a sheet of paper, and it flexes rather than resisting the fabric. Judging it by 2008 heat transfers is unfair.
The reputation persists for a second reason, though. DTF is cheap and easy to run at small scale, so a lot of low effort sellers pair it with very cheap film and very cheap blanks. Buyers keep meeting bad DTF and generalise. Our objection to DTF is not that it is low quality. It is simply that for large graphics on 100% cotton, we would rather have no layer at all.
How do you make a DTG print last longer?
Printing method sets the ceiling. Care decides how close you get to it. These five habits matter more than any print debate for how your tee looks in year two.
- Wash inside out. The single highest impact step. It stops the print abrading against the drum and other garments.
- Cold water, gentle cycle. Heat breaks down ink bonds. Cold water at 30C or below is ideal.
- Skip fabric softener and bleach. Softener coats the fibres and dulls the print. Bleach attacks the pigment directly.
- Hang dry where you can. High heat tumble drying is the fastest way to fade a DTG print. If you must tumble, use low heat.
- Never iron directly on the print. Turn the shirt inside out, or put a cloth between the iron and the design.

Is DTF printing cheap quality?
Not inherently. Modern DTF holds colour slightly better than DTG in wash testing and the layer is only 50 to 80 microns thick. The bad reputation comes from older vinyl and plastisol transfers and from low-effort sellers pairing DTF with cheap film and cheap blanks. We do not use it because we prefer no surface layer on large cotton graphics, not because it is inferior across the board.
Will a DTG print crack or peel?
No. Cracking and peeling happen when a separate layer separates from the fabric. DTG ink is absorbed into the cotton fibres, so there is nothing to lift. The only way a DTG print changes over time is by gradually lightening.
How many washes should a DTG t-shirt survive?
With inside-out cold washing and hang drying, expect it to still look strong past 50 washes, with gentle fading from around 30 onward. Regular high-heat tumble drying can roughly halve that.
Can you tell a DTG print by looking at it?
Usually. A DTG print looks absorbed into the weave, with the fabric texture visible through the ink and slightly softer edges. A film print has a more solid, even surface and crisper edges, and on dark garments it tends to look more saturated.
